The Brief

Making a waste crisis impossible to ignore

Urban Detox is a youth-powered initiative by CISD using evidence and community voices to move cities from reactive cleanup to sustainable, circular sanitation systems. In 2025, GX Media House designed the full campaign presentation deck — 16 slides that translate field research, GPS-tagged photography, and community testimonies into a compelling visual advocacy document.

The design challenge: the subject matter is unglamorous (overflowing gutters, refuse dumps, flooded streets), the audience is mixed (government officials, civil society, donors), and the ask is ambitious — systemic reform of Lagos and Abuja's waste management infrastructure.

GX built a visual identity that makes the crisis undeniable — collage aesthetics with torn-paper textures, bold Barlow Condensed typography, crisis red against institutional navy blue, and GPS-watermarked field photos embedded directly into the slide architecture.

Deliverables
Campaign Deck Design Visual Identity Photo Editing Advocacy Design
  • 16-slide presentation deck — research, findings, hotspots, solutions, call to action
  • Custom visual identity: Barlow Condensed + crumpled paper textures + collage aesthetic
  • GPS-tagged field photography integration (Ojo, Oshodi-Isolo, Ushapa FCT, Kwali FCT)
  • Dual-city coverage — Lagos (Mushin, Agege, Ajegunle, Oshodi) and Abuja FCT
  • Three-phase phased solutions framework (Short / Medium / Long term)
  • Separate institutional recommendation pages for LAWMA and AEPB

Visual strategy behind the campaign

01

Crisis Aesthetics by Design

The crumpled paper texture, collage-style typography, and torn-edge photo frames mirror the fraying reality of Nigeria's waste infrastructure. The visual language communicates breakdown before a word is read.

02

Red as Alarm, Blue as Institution

CISD's crimson red was used surgically — for crisis labels, finding headers, and call-to-action elements. Institutional navy blue carries government authority. Together they frame the crisis and its solution.

03

GPS Evidence as Design Element

Geo-tagged field photographs — complete with GPS coordinates, timestamps, and location data — are design features, not attachments. Their metadata transforms opinion into verifiable evidence.

04

Barlow Condensed as Voice

The compressed, high-impact typeface gave the campaign urgency that CISD's data demanded. Headlines take up space, demand reading, and refuse to be scrolled past.

05

Dual-City Narrative Structure

Lagos and Abuja were designed as parallel narratives — same visual template, different evidence, different hotspots, different institutions — making the dual-city scope feel systematic rather than sprawling.

06

Solutions Architecture

The three-phase solutions framework was designed as an escalating red gradient — growing darker as the timeline extends. Urgency is built into the colour, not just the text.

Findings Summary

Two cities. One systemic failure.

Lagos
Mushin · Agege · Ajegunle · Oshodi
  • Illegal dumping and roadside tipping widespread across informal settlements
  • Blocked drains cause repeated floods and property loss across the city
  • Dumpsites overflow, spilling into streets and waterways
  • LAWMA faces logistical limits, underfunding, and weak enforcement
  • PSP model disruption worsened public distrust in waste services
Abuja
Kuje · Gwagwalada · Bwari · Nyanya · Kubwa
  • Core districts stay clean; satellite towns remain systematically neglected
  • AEPB operates under severe underfunding and overlapping mandates
  • Illegal dumps and open burning common in all peri-urban zones
  • Weak enforcement enables informal fee practices and service gaps
  • Residents demand inclusive sanitation as a citywide right, not a privilege
Solutions Framework

Phased Urban Detox Solutions
